Technology Operating Model Design Architect

 

Role Purpose

 

The role of the Technology Operating Model Design Architect is to advise and assure operating model design/s for the internal Technology Function, to enable successful delivery of our ongoing Tech Transformation Portfolio/Programmes and ensure our internal Technology operating model evolves in line with agreed strategy and design principles. This role will also significantly contribute towards efforts to improve, and create alignment between, the business and technology functions within KPMG to ensure that the Firm can execute its strategy and achieve its primary goals. The Technology Operating Model Design Architect must therefore have expert knowledge in the design, development and assurance of technology operating models and good understanding of both business and technology strategy and concepts; requirements and designs; their mutual dependencies and impacts on one another; and an understanding of technology transformation and project management disciplines to create practical and feasible plans that deliver on the Firm’s primary goals.

 

The Business architecture team run two core services, 1. Process architecture management, advisory & assurance (firmwide) and 2. Operating Model Design, advisory & assurance (for our internal Technology Function.) This role will primarily be responsible for leading and maturing the Operating Model Design, advisory & assurance service but also support the maturity of Process architecture management, advisory & assurance, working closely with the Businesss Process Architect.

 

The Business Architecture team works closely with the Business Analysis, Enterprise Architecture to develop an integrated view of enterprise operations, defining and using coherent frameworks, tools and repeatable methods and techniques. The build out of an integrated view of the KPMG UK (as-is) Enterprise Operations is key to our vision in Strategy & Architecture to support accelerating and de-risking internal change and transformations. Therefore, part of this role will also look to build out the Operating Model advisory & assurance service in line with this vision and support the creation of a firm-wide business capability model.

 

 

 

Core Knowledge

  • An SME in Technology operating model design
  • Apply expert knowledge in the design, development and assurance of operating models
  • Expert knowledge of leading operating model design as part of change and transformation programme/s
  • Possess a high level of knowledge in core areas, incl. design thinking, business capability modelling, process models, value stream mapping, customer & user profiling, journey maps etc.
  • Knowledge in business process management, process analysis and modelling using proven methodologies like lean and six sigma
  • Apply knowledge of current, emerging and future technology market trends, translating these into impacts on the business and its operating model(s)

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the operations, maturity roadmap / development of the Operating Model Design & Advisory service in line with the Architecture vision and customer demand / feedback
  • Rapidly assimilate and apply KPMG's operating model frameworks and methods to assure operating model designs across our internal technology function
  • Lead the design of strategic technology operating models
  • Lead/Chair the Operating Model Design Authority to assure TOM designs across our internal technology function against internal standards
  • Track and manage Target operating model (TOM) dependencies across the internal technology transformation portfolio
  • Mature and maintain operating model design frameworks, tools and templates
  • Develop good understanding of KPMG's business and technology strategies and translate these into implications for the target state operating model
  • Up skill existing Business Architects/Business Analysts/Operating model design leads on operating model design
  • Work closely with the business and tech functions to create alignment between business and IT
  • Help the business to understand the potential impacts of current, emerging and future technology market trends
  • Ensure that Business Architecture is a key input in the development of other enterprise architecture views (e.g. Application, Technology and Data)
  • Build and govern key capability models for the KPMG UK firm
  • Translate strategy into transformation portfolios, individual initiatives and business cases, incl. operating model impacts
  • Advise on options, risks, costs vs. benefits, and impact on other business processes and roadmap priorities
  • Apply core Business Architecture methods, incl. design thinking, business capability and scenario modelling, process models, etc. to deliver tangible value
  • Support the maturity and operations of the Process Architecture advisory  & assurance service.
  • Act as deputy to the Head of Business Architecture

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience required

  • Significant experience in the development of Technology operating models
  • Experience of assuring operating model designs as part of an enterprise design authority
  • Proven track record and experience of other Business Architecture areas, incl. business and technology strategies, process models, business and technology capability models and taxonomies
  • An SME / deep knowledge of the Technology Operations domains
  • Comfortable with ambiguity, and the ability to manage and influence senior business and tech stakeholders to support the firm’s key transformation programmes.
  • Good knowledge of at least one technology domain, incl. Collaboration & Experience; Automation; Data Science & AI; Data; Integration; Security; and Cloud Engineering
  • Good understanding of design thinking, value stream mapping, customer profiles and journeys, KPIs, risk and control frameworks, and KRIs
  • A high level of general, technical knowledge incl. current, emerging and future technology market trends and their impact on business
  • Experience in Business Process Management and process modelling and analysis
  • Experience in Business Architecture or related roles (e.g. Business Analyst, Operating model designer)
  • Strong track record of people, performance and supplier management with the ability to influence and build trusting relationships at all levels of the organisation
  • ITIL and/or IT4IT certification and practical knowledge is essential 
  • To support the wider team, it would also be beneficial to have a good understanding of business process management, process analysis and modelling using proven methodologies like lean and six sigma as well as experience in using process mining to support process discovery and analysis.
  • Experience of using Aris or an equivalent enterprise modelling tool

 

 

Desirable

  • Experience of working with offshore teams
  • Qualified in Six Sigma and/or TOGAF (The Open Group Architecture Framework)
  • Practical understanding of GDPR and ISO 27001
  • Bachelor’s degree
