Assistant Manager, Further Education Funding

The Team

KPMG has one of the leading Education Skills and Productivity practices in the UK working across all key service lines. Our teams work extensively in the Further and Higher Education sectors on a range of significant projects for Government, Regulators and education providers.

We have exciting plans to further grow our Education Skills and Productivity business, but our success and reputation depends upon the quality and integrity of our services - and our people.  We are now seeking an Assistant Manager to join our Enterprise Risk team, specialising in the assurance and review of Further Education funding.

 

The Role

The role will work almost exclusively on the review, audit and investigation of further education funding and data. We work with the Department for Education (previously the Education and Skills Funding Agency) and a range of College, University and independent training providers to assess their compliance with the DfE funding rules and requirements. You will therefore demonstrate extensive experience of the DfE/ESFA funding rules and requirements and the related IT tools and systems.

We currently have an opportunity for an Assistant Manager to join our midlands business working with a wide variety of clients both within the midlands region and nationally.



The Responsibilities

  • Undertaking work at clients’ premises and liaising with clients at the highest level
  • Supervising and coaching junior members of staff to help them realise their full potential
  • Keeping managers and partners up to date with the progress of your team
  • Acting as a first choice point of contact throughout the year for your clients and managing project costs, raising fees and agreeing dates for cash collection
  • Drafting key documents and presenting to clients
  • Keeping up to date with KPMG's product and service offerings and identifying the sales opportunities that will help us grow our advisory work.
  • To work as part of a team or run funding audits, reporting directly to the senior manager or partner.

  • Assisting firms in understanding the impact of prudential developments (e.g. CRDV/CRRII, Basel 3.1, Solvency II etc.)
  • Advising firms on mechanisms to optimise their balance sheet and achieve efficient capital structures
  • Advising firms on their legal entity structures and booking models and the regulatory implications of changes to their structures
  • Providing prudential regulatory support, advice and due diligence on transactions
  • Assisting with applications to the Financial Services Authority for Part IV permissions
  • Practically supporting firms in developing the ICAAP, ILAAP, ORSA processes
  • Managing Section 166 reviews and reporting to the PRA and FCA
  • Advising firms on managing their relationship with PRA and FCA
  • Delivery of client engagements including ownership of workstreams on larger engagements and leading small and medium sized teams. 
  • Taking a leading role in the identification of business development opportunities and assisting with the preparation of client proposals
  • Mentoring and coaching of other less experienced team members
  • Support KPMG's efforts in relation to sales and marketing, Research and Development and Knowledge Management

Qualifications and Skills

  • Understanding of banks or insurance business models and commercial drivers.
  • Understanding of and experience in the PRA rules and guidance, particularly concerning prudential regulation
  • The ability to be flexible and work across a number of sectors within the financial services industry
  • Industry recognised qualification (e.g. CISA, FPC, IMC, CFA etc.) desirable but not essential.
  • Solutions-driven mindset and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective oral and written communicator (the role will involve report writing).
  • Proficient in excel (macros, VBA etc.)
  • Planning and project management skills.
  • Proven ability to achieve results, even when faced with obstacles or setbacks.
  • Positive and flexible attitude to work and a willingness to embrace new initiatives.
  • Networking, influencing and stakeholder management.
  • Confident and highly motivated individual.


Experience and Background

Relevant financial services experience with a prudential regulatory, treasury or ratings focus either as part of a financial services firm, ratings agency, consultancy  or PRA/FCA
Experience of banks’ business models and excellent technical knowledge of prudential regulatory issues (including: CRD, capital requirements, capital, liquidity, treasury, PRA authorisations etc).
Understanding of key commercial and regulatory developments and key current issues facing clientsAbility to produce and deliver high quality technical analysis, using excellent oral / written communication skills and demonstrating breadth and depth of knowledge
Strong team player, driven, self-starter.
Graduate calibre.

Overview

 

This exciting role is within our South Region Corporate Tax Advisory & Compliance team, based in our South Central Or South West offices. 

 

Our clients include UK headquartered businesses and inbound groups across a range of sectors. 

 

Our work in the tax advisory space includes supporting clients with business and fiscal change. This can include advising on new jurisdiction entry, the development of new business areas, business reorganisations, tax authority enquiries, pre/post transaction reorganisations, refinancing, cash repatriation, interest deductibility and the impact global fiscal change (e.g. BEPS Pillar 2).

 

We work as a hybrid team where we get together in the office or at client sites at least twice a week to collaborate and learn together, with flexibility over how you spend the rest of your time. 

 

The Role

 

  • Being one of the main points of contact on a portfolio of clients on day-to-day tax matters and working with Senior Managers and Managers on our larger client accounts
  • Supporting on tax advisory projects by providing UK corporation tax input based on experience and researching topics and by working with other areas of tax and our overseas members firms to incorporate their input into our advice.
  • Ensuring our clients are kept up to date with emerging corporate and wider tax developments impacting their business.
  • Supporting on the delivery of UK corporation tax compliance services
  • Supervising the work of junior members of staff and providing coaching to support their development.

Tax and Legal Technology Team

We are a team of 100+ technologists providing technology enablement services and solutions across the Tax and Legal business. This business has 4,000 tax & legal professionals covering multiple disciplines. We serve many thousands of clients and private individuals by providing a modern, market-leading suite of technology solutions that provide an efficient digital experience from routine to complex tax advice depending on client’s situation.

The team is made up of Product Owners, Business Analysts, multi-disciplinary Engineering teams (approximate 150 Software, QA and Cloud Operations engineers) and IT Service delivery professionals working on a large portfolio of systems used to improve productivity and solve key business problems across Tax & Legal. We also build cutting edge web portals for clients to interact with KPMG, maximising collaboration and ensuring seamless delivery of information to our clients.

The Role:

You will be working in a small team of Software Engineers and Quality Assurance Engineers across a variety of projects for both our clients and our internal professionals. You will be responsible both for the development and delivery of software solutions. Your team will work alongside a Product Owner who will help prioritise deliverables allowing you to focus on creating world-class solutions.

The role can be based anywhere in the UK, though preference will be given to candidates in Glasgow, Leeds, Manchester and London. We generally spend two days per week in the office. Remote or part-time workers are welcome to apply.

Whilst there is no expectation of existing knowledge of tax, we would expect you to develop a degree of domain knowledge over time.
