Joined the KPMG360° Business Services Apprenticeship programme after completing his GCSEs.

Why did you choose KPMG?

“I knew I wanted to start working straight after school, as well as gain a professional qualification. I was drawn to the focus on training and development at KPMG, as well as the range of clients and breadth of experience the Apprenticeship Programmes offer. I’d applied to a few other apprenticeships, but this was my first choice by a long way because KPMG is such an important player in the professional services sector.”

What qualifications are you working towards?

“Business was my favourite GCSE subject and I initially started studying for A-levels in Business, Law and Economics. However, I wasn’t really enjoying it, and was keen to get stuck into the world of work. Over the two year Apprenticeship programme you gain experience in the workplace whilst studying to gain a level 3 Apprenticeship in Business and Administration which was the perfect balance for me.”

What do you do on a day-to-day basis?

“Essentially, I provide business support to the firm. This can involve anything from streamlining our internal processes to supporting our client-facing colleagues. I’ve developed skills such as time-management, proactivity, multi-tasking and organisational skills.

I’ve completed a number of exams and my coursework has focused on a business plan to tackle a real-life challenge KPMG is currently facing, which I have found really interesting. After this, I’ll be presenting my plan to a panel, which will be a great learning experience and will help me put theory into practice.”

What support are you getting?

“The support I receive from my colleagues really helps me to reach my full potential – they always make time to answer my questions and give me opportunities to develop my skills and experience.

You get a lot of support with your studies at KPMG too, whether that’s through ‘The Academy’, the dedicated programme support team, your line manager or buddy. You need to be proactive too – always being curious and asking questions has really helped me. You learn a lot, quickly.”

What advice would you give to someone thinking of joining the Apprenticeship programme?

“At KPMG, there are endless opportunities and an apprenticeship programme is an amazing way to start to develop your career. All apprentices introduced into the programme with an induction where you get to meet everyone, learn the systems and values, and start to build a network of contacts, so don’t be worried about not being supported in your transition from School to work- you’re given all of the tools you need to thrive.”

What opportunities are available to you in the long term at KPMG?

“I come into work every day wanting to do well, and I feel as though I have the right connections and people around me to achieve that. I really want to play a part in the success of the firm.

I recently signed up to the Learning with Leaders programme, where I am mentored by and get to shadow senior managers. This really helps me understand the bigger picture, grow my network and get an insight into what a future here could really mean for me.

Once my apprenticeship comes to an end, there are loads of things I want to get involved in at KPMG. And because it’s such a big and supportive firm, there’s a very good chance I’ll be able to follow the path I want.”
