Our People: Mia
Mia joined as a KPMG360° Business Services Apprentice at the Birmingham office after finishing her first year of college.
I did my first year of A-levels and realised it wasn’t for me. I applied to work at KPMG because it has a reputation for being focused on their employees –– it’s a company whose values match my own.
I have to be very organised and I get to interact with a lot of people. On a daily basis, I’m responsible for colleagues’ diary and inbox management, planning events and booking travel and venues around the country or abroad.
“Recently, I took the opportunity to start looking after a Partner and two Directors – it’s a big step up within the apprenticeship.”
The transition into work has been made easier by the training I’ve had while completing a Level 3 NVQ in Business and Administration. We’ve covered topics like finance, document reduction, presentations and business solutions.
In five years’ time, I would like to still be working here. I see myself either progressing in this area or moving to a different part of the organisation. I am confident that KPMG will provide me with the help and support to do that.
I like that our work is recognised here. If we do something really well, we’re told straight away. Our managers want to praise us and build confidence.
KPMG’s values are reflected in their corporate responsibility events. At Christmas time, I was involved in the Shelter Christmas Party. We had 50 children from underprivileged backgrounds come into the office and we did some activities and gave them presents.
To work in this role you need to have confidence. You might be one of the youngest people in the building, but you need to be able to get up and go speak to people.
I’ve really enjoyed my apprenticeship, especially having other apprentices in the same building – it helps knowing other people on the same journey.
