Our People: Joe
Assistant Manager –Tax Centre of Excellence in Glasgow
Joe studied Law at Stirling University before starting his career in tax. He worked for a small, boutique firm prior to joining KPMG as a Tax Advisor in 2013. He is now an Assistant Tax Manager at our Glasgow office.
“For me, the size of the firm was important. I wanted the chance to work with bigger clients and gain exposure to more complex tax issues. KPMG didn’t disappoint. I’ve been able to work with several FTSE 100 clients – everyone from international banks to major video game companies.
“I’m very proud to be working here. Around the world, the KPMG brand is recognised, respected and trusted. There’s a real sense that your work is recognised here too. You just have to look at our rewards system. Anyone in the firm can nominate someone – for performance, putting in extra hours or just being more engaged in their work. It’s a great system, so a lot of employees get recognised.
“People associate working here with being the best – being at the pinnacle of your career.”
“There’s also plenty of opportunity for professional development. I’ve learned a huge amount since joining KPMG – much of it through moving between different departments. I started out in the Private Client department, doing personal tax returns. Then I was seconded to the Corporate Tax department, where I was able to broaden my knowledge even further.
“KPMG also supported me through the Chartered Tax Advisor qualification. More broadly, I’ve had some great opportunities to develop my career. I’ve progressed to Assistant Manager. Now I’m looking to take the next step and become a Manager.
“I’d say one of the most important qualities you need to join KPMG is the ability to pick things up quickly, so you can hit the ground running in a new team or department. And if you’re struggling, it’s vital you’re open and honest enough to speak up, so you can get things back on track as quickly as possible.
“But perhaps the most important quality is quite simply the willingness to work hard: you’ve got to be ready to put in the effort. There’s no denying working at KPMG can be challenging, but if you’re willing to put the time and effort in, it’s extremely rewarding.”
