Actuarial Consultancy Manager – Pensions

After completing a Maths degree at Warwick University, Peter trained as a Maths teacher. In search of a career change, he joined KPMG’s Reading office as a graduate trainee in in 2012. He then transferred to the London office where he has qualified as an actuary and been promoted to manager.

“While looking for a new career, I was always drawn to the Big 4 consultancy firms However, as part of my application process I always got the impression that KPMG cared about its people. That’s absolutely been true throughout my time here - people are the number one priority.

“I was attracted to the mix of technical and consulting side of actuarial work; taking a very complicated subject matter and being able to explain it in everyday language – being able to do that here was really the draw for me. There is also a wide variety of work within the Pensions firm, and during my time here I have worked on a diverse range of Trustee and Corporate clients, across a range of scheme sizes and types. In particular, I have worked on complex triennial actuarial valuations, global accounting consolidations and liability management exercises. This includes reviewing the detailed calculations, as well as presenting results to the client and advising on what it means for them.

“What’s great is that I’ve been able to apply myself in other departments too. I went on a secondment where I spent three months out at a client site, which was an amazing learning experience.

“Training and career development are key here. I’ve just gone through the promotion process and I have been encouraged from the day I started at KPMG to be ambitious and have been given clear guidance on how to progress my career. The support I received was incredible.

“KPMG has a great reputation so you feel naturally proud when you tell people you work here. KPMG is always prepared to try new things, and in the Pensions department we have pioneered a couple of new ideas that have now changed the way we do business – KPMG definitely encourages innovative thinking.
