Graduate Programmes: What is Advisory?

Advisory is just what you’d expect – we advise clients on their most pressing business challenges. So whether you’re consulting on organisational change, ambitious growth strategies or cyber security, there’ll be every opportunity for you to flex your intellect and analytical skills.

Things can change quickly here at KPMG. That means you’ll need to be ready to seize every opportunity that comes your way on projects ranging from a week to a year, from Swindon to Singapore. Every client is different so we look for people who come from all walks of life and who can look at commercial issues from every angle. And whilst every consultancy project is uniquely challenging, you can be sure that you’ll have the exposure and variety you need to rapidly develop your professional skills, network and career.

Areas of interest within Advisory

Every client is different so it makes sense that our consultants are too. To truly shine, you’ll need to enjoy the pressures of fast-paced challenging work. Acting as an expert adviser to the insurance industry, our Actuarial team helps organisations to manage financial risk. Here, you’ll be given the chance to use detailed analysis of past events to create accurate models of the future – and crucially, advise on their financial implications.

If you’re a numerate graduate who enjoys the challenge of communicating complex concepts, this programme can offer the opportunities you need to achieve professional qualifications and a successful career in insurance.

It’s a highly technical role, best suited to graduates who are numerate, extremely ambitious and able to communicate complex ideas to non-specialists. Our Actuarial Graduate Programme is a great opportunity to build a varied career, gain the Actuarial qualification in three to five years, benefit from a range of training options and help our clients to solve complex business challenges.

  • Financial mathematics and modelling
  • Probability and statistics
  • Financial reporting and economics
  • Actuarial risk management
  • Life and general insurance

Exams are held twice a year, and you can sit as many papers as you like in one sitting. At KPMG we encourage and reward quick qualification and expect our students to qualify in three to five years. Studying is primarily undertaken by a correspondence course; you will also receive internal support from KPMG and attend external tutorials. You will need a high level of commitment.

Economics and Regulation

Our Economics and Regulation team uses economic arguments, supported by figures, to build compelling cases for a wide range of clients in disputes, negotiations with their regulators or discussions with their competition authorities. We draw on first-class accountancy, business advisory and regulatory process knowledge to produce persuasive arguments supported by the strongest evidence available, without losing sight of commercial reality.

Here, you’ll develop your commercial and business acumen on a range of projects. And your experiences and responsibilities will be as varied as the people you work with. One day you could be helping to value a debt portfolio by modelling the chances of default, the next giving evidence on commodity prices in a commercial dispute or supporting a telecoms company in negotiations with their regulator.

This three-year programme is designed to help you build up your commercial and business skills through a mixture of internal training and practical work experience.

We bring together the brightest economic minds from all kinds of backgrounds, to provide the best services for our varied client base. At KPMG, it’s your talent that counts, not your background.
