Academic requirements

  • What do you look for other than good grades in a potential employee?

In addition to your academic qualifications, we look at your behavioural competencies in nine key areas. By ‘behavioural competencies’ we mean the skills and behaviours you’ll need to be successful at KPMG.

There’s no single type of person who succeeds at KPMG, but we do look for people with something special to offer. We’re just as interested in other aspects of your experience and other parts of your character. Overall, we’re looking for people with a strong awareness of business, a curiosity to find out more and the ability to think of new ways to solve problems. We’re also interested in people who take pride in their work, have integrity, strive to improve themselves and can build strong relationships that bring out the best in others.

When preparing for an interview, you should think about these areas carefully and consider how you’ve demonstrated these behaviours in your life. This could have been through academic work, hobbies, part-time jobs. Remember what you did, the role you played and the challenges you faced. Our behavioural capabilities are important to us, and you will be assessed on these throughout the entire recruitment process. We recommend getting to know each of the capabilities and preparing examples of when you may have demonstrated each behaviour. Your examples can be drawn from your studies, work or extra-curricular experiences.

We value any experience you’ve gained so far and are interested in hearing about it. Try to think about specific examples of things you’ve done in the last two to three years which relate to our behavioural competencies. Spend some time remembering what you did, what role you played and what challenges you faced.

  • Can I apply if I am studying or have an AAT Qualification?

Yes, you are able to apply to KPMG if you are studying towards or have obtained an AAT qualification. However, please note these qualifications will not make you exempt from other academic requirements. Therefore, you will be required to meet our minimum requirements for GCSEs, A-levels and Degree Classification.

  • I don't meet your minimum academic requirements. Will I automatically be unsuccessful?

No. However, our minimum academic requirements have been developed over time as a guide to how well you should be able to cope with the demands of the role, professional exams and training and, as such, they are very important in the selection process. Although, it’s not just your academic performance we are interested in, we will assess your application by combining a number of different factors including work experience and how you perform in our tests.

  • What are your minimum academic requirements?

As a general rule, you’ll be expected to meet the following requirements:

    • Minimum grade B GCSE Maths and grade B GCSE English Language or equivalent
    • Minimum of 300 UCAS* Tariff points (before June 2017) or 120 UCAS Tariff points (after June 2017) or equivalent
    • Minimum 2:1 degree in any discipline

Please note, we only consider your GCSE grades and top three A-level grades but we do not accept General Studies.

    * Or equivalent.

Whilst your academics are important within our recruitment process, we will consider these alongside other factors. This wider perspective helps us ensure that we are giving you the best opportunity to demonstrate your potential. We assess your application against your academic achievement, work experience and how you perform in our tests to build our confidence in whether you will be a success at KPMG.

  • Can I apply for a graduate position if I’m part-qualified?

If you’ve passed professional exams and have relevant work experience then please visit the Experienced Professionals part of our website. However, if you’ve already completed some professional exams, but don’t have relevant work experience, we may be able to consider you for a Graduate Programme. There are a number of points which you need to be aware of:

    • Once you’ve submitted your application, providing you meet the standard entry requirements, we’ll ask for details of your full academic history including all exam attempts.
    • Should you wish to continue studying for your current professional qualification we’ll review any previous exam results obtained against our exam training policy and pass marks and will only consider people who meet our required standards.
    • Part-qualified ICAS trainees wanting to join Audit can only join in Scotland as ICAS is not offered by KPMG elsewhere in the UK. Part-qualified ACA students can’t join in Scotland as trainees based there study towards the ICAS qualification.
    • Our Student Recruitment team are only able to accept applications from part-qualified ACCA trainees who have no related work experience i.e. purely academic ACCA exposure. Part-qualified ACCA trainees with relevant work experience counting towards their ACCA qualification should visit the Experienced Professionals part of our website.
    • If you’ve already started a professional qualification at another firm and have had your training contract terminated due to exam failure, you can’t apply to study for an alternative qualification at KPMG.
    • If you’ve been affected by personal circumstances that had an impact on your previous exam performance then we may take this into account. Although you will need to provide us with further information, details of which will be discussed with you during the application process.
    • If you’ve already passed some exams then you won’t need to sit the same exam again.

If you have been, you’ll be invited to sit online numerical and verbal tests. Then your application will be reviewed, after which the next stage is a digital submission. • I have studied overseas – will you be able to understand my academic details?

  • Once I have applied to a specific location, am I able to switch my application to an alternative office?

Before submitting an application, please ensure that the location you are applying to is realistic to your needs. It is extremely unlikely that we will be able to transfer your application to an alternative location. Therefore, we want you to be motivated not only to KPMG and the programme but also the location, so take time to ensure you chose the right location for your career.  However, if you do have extenuating circumstances please discuss these with your recruiter and this will be dealt with on an individual basis.

  • I’m an international student and my visa runs out prior to the programme’s start date. Am I still able to apply?

There are certain, limited, circumstances in which we may be able to sponsor a Tier 2 (General) visa for you to obtain this right to work, where we are able to satisfy the Resident Labour Market Test (RLMT) in the UK. The RLMT requires KPMG to demonstrate that there are no suitably qualified resident workers to fill the vacancy or that your application would be exempt from the RLMT. It is highly likely that the majority of our graduate roles will be filled by settled workers, however, you may still want to apply.

Deciding where to apply

  • If I don’t have much experience in finance, how do I know which area I’d be best suited to e.g. Tax?

Our recruitment process is similar for all our programmes, so your choice over which programme you’d like to apply to should be based on what you’re interested in.

You can find out more by researching the different career paths available. Make use of employee profiles, other sections on our website and other company websites. You could even research online careers services and Professional Institute websites (for example, ICAEW, ICAS, CFA) to find out more. Your University Careers Service will also be an invaluable source of information on a career in Audit, Tax or Deal Advisory. If you need more information you can visit our Contact page. Additionally, KPMG host a variety of events through the year. Please click here for details of upcoming events.

  • If I don't have Tech experience, but am interested in Tech, should I apply?

Yes! Whilst you don’t necessarily need to be a technical guru we are looking for individuals who have a keen interest in technology and a desire to get involved in a variety of projects but not necessarily a background in technology (our current graduates have degrees in a variety of subjects). Most importantly, you’ll have an appetite to learn about technology and how we can best support our clients.

Other general queries about applying

  • Do you have an age limit?

No, age is not important to us. KPMG is an equal opportunities employer and we welcome applications from all backgrounds. We pride ourselves on our commitment to creating the kind of inclusive workplace that treats everyone with respect, and where people can be themselves and still achieve their potential. All applicants are judged on their demonstrated abilities, so as long as you meet our minimum academic criteria, you can apply to KPMG.

  • I’ve already graduated. Can I still apply to the graduate training scheme?

Yes. We welcome applications from people who have already graduated or who are studying for a postgraduate qualification – we value any extra experience or skills you may have gained during the extra time spent working or studying. Around a third of our annual intake join us with this additional experience.

People who already have significant professional experience or professional qualifications should, however, visit our dedicated website for Experienced Professionals.

  • Can I defer my application for a year?

If you do wish to defer your application, you’ll need to speak to a member of the Student Recruitment team to discuss if this is an option. The option to offer you a deferred starting date will be subject to business need and requirements in the area you have applied for.

  • Can I apply to more than one country?

If you apply to a Graduate role in the UK your application will only be considered for that office location. Our applications are not linked to any other KPMG country.  KPMG member firms in other countries may have differing processes, so please do check with that country’s KPMG careers/recruitment webpage.
