The Team

Infrastructure Advisory Group (IAG), a part of KPMG Deal Advisory in the UK consists of over 400 experienced professionals and has been operating for over 2 decades. It is widely recognised as the leading independent business, financial and regulatory adviser in the infrastructure space.

The Power & Utilities (P&U) practice in IAG has c20 partners and directors and over 100 experts encompassing work for major clients including many large utilities in the UK and across the world. We provide in-depth advice and support on strategic, financial, regulatory, and commercial issues across Power & Utilities, Transport, Telecoms & Digital, Social and other infrastructure in the UK, Europe and beyond. We work closely with other teams across KPMG to provide holistic offering to our clients.

Our work covers market and policy design, business and financial planning, economic and regulatory analysis, financial advice, project structuring and deal execution to enable private and public players to deliver, finance and operate infrastructure assets and provide utilities services to customers. We assist our clients in preparing business plans, structuring and appraising investments, securing financing, benchmarking performance and managing regulatory regimes to help them provide best possible service to customers and maximise shareholder value. We are widely recognised by many industry stakeholders as market leaders influencing the future of infrastructure and utilities sectors.

The P&U practice is divided into several teams. We are seeking to recruit a highly capable and experienced senior leader to lead our Transactions and Energy Transition Team of c10 people.

The Role:

As the Head of the Transaction & Energy Transition team in P&U, you will be responsible for:

• Leading the team’s origination and execution effort
• Leading engagements to provide financial, regulatory and market analysis to help infrastructure investors and corporate development teams identify investment opportunities
• Providing commercial and regulatory due diligence as well as strategic advice on transactions, with a focus on regulated utilities and infrastructure, leveraging our sector knowledge and specialist skills in finance, regulation, and benchmarking
• Advising utilities on strategic investments, value creation, asset valuation and growth opportunities across regulated and competitive infrastructure businesses
• Advising investors, lenders and infrastructure owners on acquisitions, disposals and capital raising, providing support and value creation strategies across power and infrastructure assets.
• Leading several engagements of different sizes on a day-to-day basis, with responsibility for the quality of deliverables produced for clients
• Working closely with our colleagues in other parts of Deal Advisory to develop and maintain business relationships with clients, in particular infrastructure investors
• Contributing to the overall growth of the P&U team, IAG and the whole firm
• Providing effective management, coaching and mentoring of junior staff

The projects that you will advise on will be high profile and varied, focusing on utilities and energy transition assets. For example, the team has recently provided:

• strategic, regulatory and commercial buy-side advice on a large UK water utility for a consortium of financial investors
• regulatory vendor due diligence on a large UK water utility
• lead advisor to an infrastructure fund on an investment in gas distribution networks
• regulatory, market and strategic buy-side due diligence on UK electricity grid for a utility client
• M&A advice on the sale of a C&I solar platform (jointly with our M&A team)
• regulatory and strategic review of an energy efficiency company in Europe
• regulatory & commercial due diligence on a large OFTO
• advice to a global infrastructure fund on the future of gas market and regulation

The Person:

The ideal candidate will have

• At demonstrable experience of advising on transactions in the Power & Utilities sector 
• Specific experience of providing regulatory and commercial due diligence and/or strategic and finance advice on deals in the Power and Utilities sector
• Experience of managing transactions in infrastructure, with good understanding of transaction process and execution
• Experience of UK regulated utilities and understanding of the key aspects of the UK energy policy, water sector and economic regulation; understanding of P&U sectors and regulation in other jurisdictions would be also very helpful for this role
• Established relationships with at least some infrastructure investors
• Ability to work at pace and during intense periods of live transactions
• Excellent presentation and communication skills
• Strong commercial awareness
• A proactive attitude and a will to succeed, with experience of finding and developing opportunities
