Job description

About the role

KPMG Advisory brings together specialist teams that help organisations address complex challenges, manage risk and improve performance. Within Governance, Risk and Compliance Services, you will join a 20-person Manchester team that primarily serves clients across the North of England while collaborating with the wider national practice.

You will support a portfolio of public and private sector clients with internal audit, internal control, corporate governance and risk management services. The work includes establishing and reviewing internal audit functions, assurance mapping, annual audit planning, outsourced and co-sourced delivery, process improvement, control reviews, governance reviews, contract compliance work and training. You will have ownership of day-to-day engagement delivery and build trusted relationships with senior KPMG and client stakeholders.

Roles and responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day delivery and financial performance of a UK-wide portfolio of client engagements, maintaining effective relationships with senior client and KPMG stakeholders.

  • Develop and deliver risk-based internal audit strategies and annual plans that address client priorities, service quality and project management requirements.

  • Lead individual reviews and programmes of work, including planning, fieldwork oversight, quality assurance, reporting and the production of Audit Committee papers.

  • Evaluate audit evidence against relevant Institute of Internal Auditors requirements, Public Sector Internal Audit Standards and KPMG methodology, ensuring conclusions are clear and well supported.

  • Present findings to clients and produce concise, practical reports that explain risks, controls and recommended improvements.

  • Coordinate specialist input from colleagues across KPMG, including technology and cyber risk teams, to provide joined-up advice and assurance.

  • Plan engagement budgets and resources, monitor work in progress, support timely billing, and identify appropriate opportunities to extend client support.

  • Coach colleagues, share internal audit and risk management knowledge, and contribute to proposals, tenders and wider business development activity.

Experience and skills needed

  • Experience delivering internal audit, internal control, governance or risk management engagements in the public sector, private sector or professional services.

  • Experience planning and overseeing internal audit fieldwork, reviewing evidence and applying relevant professional or public sector internal audit standards.

  • Experience managing projects, budgets, resources and delivery milestones across multiple engagements or workstreams.

  • Experience acting as a main or secondary client contact and managing day-to-day relationships with senior finance or equivalent stakeholders.

  • Strong knowledge of organisational risks, business processes and internal controls, with the ability to translate findings into practical recommendations.

  • Evidence of producing clear reports, presenting findings and contributing to proposals, tenders or business development activity.

Qualifications required

A relevant professional qualification, such as the Institute of Internal Auditors qualification, a qualification from a Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies member organisation, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, or an equivalent recognised qualification.
