Job description

Join KPMG Tax as a Disputes Manager and help clients navigate potential and ongoing disputes with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). You’ll combine tax litigation expertise with practical case management, drafting and legal research across matters that may progress through the UK courts and tribunals. Working with clients, counsel, junior colleagues and specialists across KPMG, you’ll contribute early legal and technical insight while helping cases move forward effectively. This London-based opportunity offers broad exposure across taxes and disputes within a growing multidisciplinary team.

About the Role

The issues surrounding tax and legal services are constantly evolving, both locally and globally. Our Tax and Law experts are at the forefront of providing a range of specialist tax and legal knowledge and technologies to empower businesses. This is why you'll find KPMG the perfect place for you to build your expertise, progress your career and make your mark.

Our tax professionals have an impact on some of the most pressing global challenges of the day, such as climate change, incentives and transparency. We offer real scale and size in terms of the range of tax solutions we offer clients. Our services span: International Tax, Deal Advisory Tax and Transfer Pricing; Business Taxes, covering advisory, compliance, claims and incentives and transformation; People Taxes, advising on all aspects of employee reward, tax issues arising as a result of having a global workforce as well as advising high-net-worth individuals and entrepreneurial families; and Indirect Taxes.

As a Disputes Manager, you’ll support clients and the wider team on potential and ongoing disputes with HMRC. You’ll provide early legal and technical input, assess litigation risk across a range of matters and support proceedings before the Tax Tribunals, High Court, Court of Appeal, Supreme Court and European Court of Justice. Alongside hands-on case management, drafting, research and hearing preparation, you’ll collaborate with counsel and colleagues across KPMG and support the development of junior team members.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Provide early legal and technical input on potential disputes with HMRC and assess the associated litigation risk.
  • Support litigation before the Tax Tribunals, High Court, Court of Appeal, Supreme Court and European Court of Justice.
  • Manage group litigation cases and help ensure work progresses effectively.
  • Prepare first drafts of pleadings, including notices of appeal and witness statements.
  • Draft clear correspondence, advice, reports and instructions to counsel.
  • Undertake legal research across relevant tax and litigation matters.
  • Prepare for hearings by compiling bundles of documents and authorities, attending conferences and producing settled notes.
  • Delegate appropriate work to junior colleagues and support their development.
  • Build effective relationships with clients and colleagues across KPMG.
  • Contribute to team and wider firm events that promote the team’s work and develop your knowledge of new tax technical and legal matters.

Experience and Skills Needed

  • Tax litigation experience, rather than solely general litigation experience, gained in a similar role within a law firm or Big Four practice.
  • Experience across a range of taxes, particularly corporate and indirect taxes.
  • A good understanding of procedure before the UK Tribunals.
  • Experience of litigation and/or tax matters for commercial clients.
  • Strong technical, drafting, organisational and relationship-building skills.
  • The ability to get up to speed quickly on tax technical matters and work collaboratively across a multidisciplinary firm.
  • A proactive, analytical and detail-focused approach, with a commitment to high-quality client service and supporting colleagues’ development.

Qualifications Required

  • Qualified solicitor with demonstrable post-qualification experience.
