KPMG Milton Keynes touches on a significant proportion of businesses in the area, from innovative and fast-growing SMEs through to major multinationals and large listed companies. We have over 80 staff based in our Milton Keynes office providing primarily corporate audit services with some audits in the financial services, pensions and public sectors, in addition to tax and advisory services to businesses in key sectors such as the automotive, construction, leisure, business services, technology and retail industries.

The audit practice is made up of approximately 50 staff, led by 2 Partners. Our clients cross a huge range of sectors and include FTSE listed businesses such as an online real estate portal, automobile manufacturers including a luxury brand and motor racing association, and a large chain of health clubs. The patch covers a geographical area from Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire in the West, and North Hertfordshire in the South. We also service a large number of global clients and our teams from Milton Keynes audit businesses in a large number of countries.

We are looking for recently qualified accountants to join the audit practice in our Milton Keynes office. As an assistant manager you will get to work with a wide range of clients within a cross functional office. Our client base is from a wide range of business sectors, ranging in size from owner-managed businesses to multi-national organisations. Many of our clients are subsidiaries of overseas companies giving our work a truly international perspective.

The Responsibilities


- Planning and project managing all aspects of audits
- Leading teams on the ground, reporting directly to the manager on a day to day basis
- Budgeting and monitoring the financial performance of projects, focusing on optimising profitability
- Demonstrating practical knowledge of UK GAAP, IFRS, and IAS
- Experience of US GAAP would be an advantage although not essential
- Identifying, researching and helping to resolve complex audit issues
- Supervising and coaching junior members of staff to help them realise their full potential
- Building relationships with the client staff and acting as an ambassador for the firm
- Keeping up to date with KPMG's product and service offerings and identifying the sales opportunities that will help us grow our business
- Reporting to audit managers and partners on all salient points arising from audits.

The Role
This is a varied and interesting role where the job holder will be required to perform a number of key administrative duties alongside providing professional front of house support.


We are looking for an excellent communicator who has the ability to provide outstanding customer service, is extremely well organised and demonstrates the ability to pay close attention to detail. The job holder will need to be self-sufficient, enthusiastic, confident and assertive. The role requires the ability to prioritise workloads to meet tight deadlines.

The candidate must have high professional standards, ideally with experience of working in a professional services environment and dealing directly with clients. Whilst training will be provided, the candidate will be a self-starter who is keen to learn. The role would suit an experienced professional candidate or a less experienced candidate with a strong track record and the aptitude to learn and develop.

Description of the role:

— Be the first point of contact for in-office ASK administrative support
— Build a comprehensive knowledge of your local teams’ business and develop an understanding of KPMG’s processes and procedures
— Support in arranging and co-ordinating local events and meetings
— Scan, photocopy and bind documents
— Co-ordinate the collection of printing and binding of documents via Document Production Centre where appropriate
— Support the distribution of incoming post (including electronic post), highlight/manage urgent post and date stamp as required
— Barcode, receive and return PaperChase files, sending off-site as required
— Ensure all filing systems, archive records are accurate and hard copy filing completed for location
— Label courier packages and arrange couriers
— Hand deliver documents
— Assist with hard copy filing
— Update location activity shared calendars
— Complete, research and collate information
— Provide Filesite support, including uploading documents and providing access to folders
— Assist and support BSG colleagues when organising local events
— Answer all calls promptly and politely in accordance with KPMG’s policy, ensuring that accurate and detailed messages are taken and distributed and that all queries are dealt with professionally and effectively
— Deal with all aspects of client arrival management including booking meetings, visitor passes, car parking
— Ensure meeting rooms are maintained to a high standard throughout the day, ensuring adequate supplies of refreshments are available
— Act as a point of contact for the office by dealing with calls, emails and deliveries and ensuring information is forwarded to all relevant parties where appropriate
— Liaise with Facilities and Business Support team, contractors, the Building Landlord, tenants and IT in relation to any issues within the office and to receive updates
— Manage and order stationery
— Nominated Evacuation Marshal and First Aider, training will be provided
— IOSH Working Safely accredited, training will be provided
— Management of staff access passes
— Management of landlord access where required
— Report maintenance issues with landlord as required

The Department

Our KPMG Northern Home Counties National Markets audit team is based across the Milton Keynes and Watford offices and it consists of around 110 client facing staff led by 5 Partners and 6 Directors, who service clients across a variety of sectors, including: retail, media, construction, mining, recruitment, telecommunications and sports. Our audit clients, who are both listed and non-listed, vary in size from large multi-national groups through to small owner managed business based across Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Northants, Hertfordshire, North London and the surrounding areas. The National Markets London audit department also works in conjunction with other services including Corporate Tax, Deal Advisory, Pensions and Restructuring.

Sitting within the NHC National Markets department is our London Region Centre of Excellence for pension’s audit. The team, led by a Director and supported by 1 other Director and 3 managers, is responsible for the audit of c.70 pension schemes based across the wider London Region and South East. Our schemes include defined benefit, defined contribution, hybrid and earmarked pension schemes, typically with assets up to £500million.
The London Region Centre of Excellence is one of 6 operating across the UK and as a firm, KPMG audit some 620 schemes including 45 of the top 100 schemes by size making us No. 1 in this market.

The Responsibilities:

Working in a part time capacity (c.21 hours per week) you will manage and deliver pensions audit engagements from planning through to completion. The role will require proficiency in UK GAAP and the Pensions SORP. You will have your own portfolio of clients with responsibility for agreeing audit timetables, working with Trustees and scheme administrators, briefing the audit team, including other specialists, monitoring budgets and supervising the KPMG audit process. This will include:
• To manage a portfolio of pensions audit engagements, overseeing in-charge and audit assistants work ensuring compliance with client, statutory and KPMG requirements, appreciating relevant internal and external market factors, ensuring the effective and timely delivery of high quality audit engagements
• Oversee and direct the budgeting, planning, co-ordination and control of engagements in accordance with client, statutory, KPMG and business requirements to ensure effective service delivery and maximised recoverability
• Providing coaching and guidance to both on- and off-shore staff working on your engagements
• Nurture and seek worthwhile relationships with clients, business departments and staff, for the sharing of information and to identify and progress current and future Audit requirements
• Contributes towards the creation, implementation and delivery of the Audit Business Plan and offer support in relation to issues identified as a result of organisational or client focus change
• Assist the Director in monitoring the effectiveness of Audit services delivered, providing feedback and reflection on the quality of service accordingly
• Preparation of reports to senior management and Trustee boards
• Assist with business development opportunities. This would involve initial meetings, preparing proposal documents and presenting at pitches.
There will be opportunity and encouragement for additional responsibilities outside this day to day role, such as assisting with pensions-specific training courses for in-charges and audit assistants, involvement in local client events and taking on a performance manager role.

• Well-developed understanding of the wider commercial background KPMG operates in demonstrating awareness of the issues facing our clients on a day to day basis

Qualifications and Skills

• Time and exam Qualified Accountant - ACA, ACCA or country equivalent
• Sound working knowledge of UK GAAP and the Pensions SORP
• IT literacy with sound knowledge and experience of Excel/Word
• Recent and significant experience as a Manager in an audit capacity within a top 10 accountancy firm
• Current experience of accounting and financial reporting standards including IFRS and UK standards
• Significant audit experience for pension schemes
