Assistant Manager – External Affairs

Overview Job Description

At KPMG, our values define who we are and the way we do business. As a leading professional services firm, we know that our strength and capability come from our people – their different perspectives, experiences and backgrounds.
An Assistant Manager is required to help coordinate the firm’s external affairs function, support the delivery of KPMG’s external affairs strategy, monitor relevant political and public policy developments, and oversee a two-way flow of relevant information to government and client facing commercial teams.

Purpose for strong political engagement

As a global organisation and responsible business, KPMG has a societal obligation and a voice to contribute to public debate around legal, regulatory and policy issues that affect our business and that of our clients at a local, national and European level.

We are a responsible business

As a large UK business with a diverse client base, KPMG is well-placed to provide a voice and convening power on issues affecting a wide range of UK enterprises: from start-ups to multinational businesses. With our experience of issues facing businesses and our professional expertise, we have a responsibility to raise our voice in policy debate where we could add our expertise in influencing decisions connected with how business operates.

Shaping the debate

Decisions made by our elected representatives can either facilitate or restrict the work that we do and shape the business and economic environment in which we and our clients operate. It is essential that we engage in building strong relationships with Government, legislators and regulators. At this time, the audit sector is under a great deal of scrutiny in the UK and overseas and significant changes to the regulatory regime, the market and the audit ‘product’ itself are being debated. It is critical that KPMG maintains a strong voice in these conversations.

Role & Responsibilities

• Assist in the development and delivery of the firm’s external affairs strategy, including monitoring key political developments, providing briefings for senior KPMG staff, and stakeholder management in relation to the audit, accounting and corporate reporting debate but also more widely as required.
• Assist the firm’s external political engagement with government departments, parliamentarians, industry bodies and think tanks on issues relevant to KPMG.
• Assist the development and maintenance of internal and external stakeholder networks to support the external affairs function.
Project manage and / or support relevant colleagues in project managing the firm’s reactive response to the audit debate and its development of proactive thought leadership ideas and themes. This includes ‘holding the pen’ and driving the timetable to ensure internal co-ordination and buy in.
• Assist in issues management, working with the press office and internal comms within corporate affairs, and the wider firm where required.
• Mapping stakeholder groups in relation to the range of issues affecting our sector.
• Supporting the creation and delivery of the firm’s activity programme at party conference, and other external events.
• Assisting with the coordination of our engagement activity with membership bodies.
• Draft briefings, core scripts and other support to principals when engaging politically and in public policy debates.
• Attend meetings with political and other stakeholders either alone or supporting senior colleagues.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

The ideal candidate will have:

• An understanding of the audit and regulatory reform debate and the ability to pick up key issues quickly
• Strong attention to detail, a diligent approach and excellent project management skills
• The ability to engage with the firm’s senior leadership and their support teams
• Some experience in a political, public policy or public affairs environment
• A broad understanding of key political developments in Westminster and in devolved national and local government, especially those of relevance to KPMG.
• An understanding of UK parliamentary and governmental systems and process.
• Strong interpersonal and presentation skills.
• Some experience of researching and briefing on fast-moving topical issues.
• Some experience of developing and running multi-stakeholder initiatives.
• Some experience of a commercial environment - preferably cross-sectoral - and experience in the interaction between an external affairs function and a commercial function.
• An understanding and experience of political party engagement, through party conferences, think tanks, other events or personal political activity.
• Good writing and analytical skills, and the ability to write both strategically and creatively under tight deadlines.
• Willingness to conduct occasional travel across the UK.

Corporate Tax Assistant Manager (Inhouse)

Location: London

Capability: KPMG Business Services

Service line: IHQ

Experience level: Associate/Assistant Manager

Employment type: Full Time

Department Information

KPMG International (KPMGI) carries on business activities for the overall benefit of KPMG network firms, but does not provide professional services to clients. One of the main purposes of KPMGI is to facilitate the provision by KPMG network firms of high-quality audit, tax, and advisory services to their clients. For example, KPMGI establishes and facilitates the implementation and maintenance of uniform policies and standards of work and conduct by the KPMG network firms, and protects and enhances the use of the KPMG name and brand for the benefit of these entities.

The in-house tax team for KPMGI works on a wide and varied range of tax matters across direct and indirect tax. Some of the work is UK focused but much of the work is international, dealing with a variety of jurisdictions outside the UK. We drive the tax strategy, which means understanding KPMGI’s business requirements and interacting with a variety of internal and external stakeholders to provide tax advice and ensure that tax obligations are met around the world. The work is varied and we operate in a challenging and stimulating environment.
This is a unique opportunity to work in an internal rather than client-facing KPMG team.

Like many in-house tax teams, KPMGI outsources its compliance and also appoints advisors to assist on specific projects. Where we use outside advisors, the tax team is responsible for actively managing the advisors, scoping their work, agreeing their fees, receiving and reviewing output and communicating findings and action points to the business.

Role and Responsibilities

The successful applicant will demonstrate an entrepreneurial attitude by working on a variety of advisory and compliance projects. You will need to be capable of taking ownership of tasks and thinking through technical and business issues, and will relish a role which is constantly changing according to the needs of the business and the requirements of the KPMG network firms globally. We are however a close knot team and you will receive guidance and support from other team members to develop and grow in this dynamic environment.

Typically, projects involve interaction with other teams within KPMGI (e.g. commercial, legal, finance) and with the tax team at the relevant KPMG member firm. With the support and guidance of other in-house tax team members projects might include:

• Being responsible for tax compliance filings in a number of different jurisdictions, including overseeing the gathering of information, managing advisors and reviewing tax returns.
• Dealing with enquiries from local tax authorities.
• Assessing the corporate tax and VAT compliance obligations in various territories and coordinating with the finance team in order to gather relevant data and local tax advisors in order to fulfil any tax filing obligations.
• Assisting on a wide range of ad hoc advisory projects in the UK and overseas, including consideration of financial information and reading relevant legal documentation.
• Assisting with the practical implementation of ad hoc projects, both from a compliance process perspective and a one of transaction / project perspective.
• Monitoring the implementation of significant tax legislative changes around the world (e.g. BEPS) and assessing its impact on KPMGI’s tax position.

Qualifications and Skills

Qualified CTA or equivalent, with a corporate tax background. Some indirect tax experience preferred but not essential.

Experience and Background

• High level of drive and enthusiasm and a willingness to learn about new taxes.
• Enjoy working with individuals from diverse backgrounds around the world, and good at quickly building different networks according to the demands of each project.
• Strong team player but also capable of working independently and using initiative to find practical solutions to tax technical and business matters.
• Strong project management skills; enjoy dealing with issues crossing over multiple taxes and multiple jurisdictions.
• Ability to communicate effectively (internally and externally) both in writing and orally, with tax specialists and non-tax specialists, in the UK and overseas.
• UK and international tax knowledge and experience, including experience in tax compliance and reading financial information, and some knowledge of indirect taxes.
