Our People Services practice encompasses a wide range of areas across both Global Mobility Services (GMS) and Employer Reward Services (ERS). Our GMS team assists organisations to manage their globally mobile workforce. For our clients we provide a single source of advisory and compliance experience covering all aspects of global mobility and international assignments. Services range from international tax compliance and consultancy, advising on international social security and pensions through to helping clients to design their global mobility policies or move into a new territory. Our ERS team brings a number of key elements under one umbrella, Reward, Employment Solutions and Employee Benefit Solutions all delivering a wide range of services. The scope is broad, covering payroll and HMRC compliance, employee reward and benefit strategy design including technology, executive strategic reward, valuation services, workforce management and advice on national minimum wage and gender pay gap.

The Role

• Builds and develops positive constructive relationships inside and outside KPMG
• Assessing problems from multiple angles to ensure all relevant issues are considered when making decisions
• Proactively driving forward new and creative ideas which benefit the client
• Support the delivery of valuation projects within budget and timeframe under the assistance of a Manager or Senior Manager.
• Provide an analysis of the particular company / business being valued using business analysis techniques.
• Draft comprehensive valuation reports with the assistance of a Manager or Senior Manager.
• Liaise with both the internal and external client to ensure that the two way flow of information runs smoothly.
• Research the background of the particular company / business being valued, identifying broadly comparable quoted companies, identifying and analysing sales data and calculating exit multiples. All this is done using a wide range of research tools including OneSource, LexisNexis, Hemscott and Datastream and our dedicated offshore research team.

Ideally, candidates should have experience of:

• Valuations under ITEPA for management incentive plans;
• Valuations of shares and other assets such as intangibles for tax purposes;
• Preparation of valuation models using DCF and other quantitative valuation approaches (option pricing theory etc.);
• Preparation of valuation reports and letters for UK tax purposes; and
• Experience in dealing with HMRC’s Shares and Assets Valuation team.
• IFRS 2 valuation experience is beneficial but not essential.

However, candidates with a basic understanding of valuation techniques, a strong sense of commercial awareness of how businesses operates and enthusiasm to learn will also be considered.

KPMG’s Tax Valuation Services team provides advice whenever the tax rules give rise to a need to establish the market value of shares, intangible assets and other business assets. The team provides valuation services to clients across a broad spectrum of industries including high net worth individuals, senior employees / management in owner managed and private equity backed companies as well as large multi-nationals. The team works closely with our Reward and Transfer Pricing teams, as well as providing support on M&A engagements.


To support the ambitious growth plans for each of these teams, we are seeking to grow our Tax Valuation Services practice through the development of regional hubs and London. The TVS team, which are part of National Markets, are looking for a Senior Manager level candidate to join one their teams based in London, Birmingham or Manchester.



Key Responsibilities


A Senior Manager in the department can expect to do a wide range of work including:


- Manage the delivery and internal/external client relationship for valuation projects for a wide range of clients across all industry sectors. We work for the full spectrum of clients from FTSE 100 to start-ups
- Apply and have a deep understanding of the full range of valuation methods (DCF, capitalised earnings, option approaches etc) for UK tax purposes including valuations for: corporate tax, income tax (employee share transactions), inheritance tax and capital gains tax
- Manage junior team members to prepare valuation analysis and coordinate market data research
- Negotiate with HMRC in valuations
- Develop and review valuation and analysis, including supporting junior team members to prepare valuation reports letters to be submitted to HMRC
- Develop and build internal and external relationships to help grow the Tax Valuation Services business in focused areas
- Mentor and develop junior members of the team



Experience and Background


Ideally, candidates should have experience in:
- Valuations under ITEPA for management incentive plans

1. Summary of Role Purpose
Responsible for delivering high quality specialist pensions support to KPMG Audit in relation to DB pension schemes sponsored by key FTSE audit clients.
2. Description of the role:
• Lead client contact on key pensions audit engagements, with overall responsibility for client relationship and a focus on our largest FTSE accounts
• Final review and sign-off of reporting and closing out of issues on each case
• Managing junior team through process and providing technical support on non-standard procedures (e.g. special event accounting, areas of difference)
• Technical lead in at least one specialist knowledge area (technical accounting support, audit tools and procedures, yield curves, longevity, valuation of longevity swaps, valuation of annuity policies, public sector, US GAAP, valuation of asset backed funding interests)
• Contribute to developing streamlined and efficient procedures, whist maintaining an absolute focus on quality

3. Role dimensions

3.1 Leadership & Management:

The successful candidate at senior manager level will be expected to run client engagement teams to deliver audit cases, and to contribute to the overall success of the team. Team members at senior manager and manager level are likely to have performance management responsibilities for junior team members.

Senior Managers will take responsiblility for signing off reporting in respect of key FTSE audit clients, with reporting being delivered to KPMG Audit in line with KPMG audit quality procedures.

3.2 Stakeholder Interaction & Challenges

Lead client contact on key FTSE clients throughout the audit process, typically liaising with in-house pensions managers and group finance contacts. Key clients include FTSE companies across all sectors.

As well as client meetings/calls to cover elements of the audit process from planning through to delivery of final reporting, there will occasionally be challenging client conversations where views differ on appropriate accounting treatments or where audit differences are identified. These will require the successful candidate to apply judgement and to be confident in clearly communicating our audit conclusions.


3.3 Impact, Risk, Accountability & Governance


The team will deliver over 500 audit support cases each year, covering KPMG’s largest high profile clients through to mid-market clients. A focus on quality and consistency will be central to everything that we do.

4. The Person
4.1 Experience

Essential - The successful candidate will ideally be a qualified actuary with relevant experience working in pensions accounting and/or audit, and a proven track record of working closely with teams to deliver to deadlines.

Desirable – Pensions accounting Subject Matter Expert with detailed knowledge of pensions reporting under IFRS and specialist knowledge in one or more of the areas outlined below.

4.2 Expertise / Technical role requirements
• Deep technical knowledge of DB pension scheme valuations, roll forward methodologies and actuarial techniques
• Understanding of the wider UK pensions landscape, the FRC audit environment and the issues facing our clients
• Working knowledge of IAS19 and pensions accounting
• The successful candidate will also have experience of one or more of the following specialist knowledge areas (and will be technical lead on at least one):
o technical accounting support
o audit tools and procedures
o yield curves
o longevity
o valuation of longevity swaps and annuity policies
o public sector pension schemes
o US GAAP
