Indirect Tax Senior Manager (Trade & Customs)

Job Description

KPMG Overview

KPMG has one of the leading Indirect Tax practices in the UK. The Indirect Tax practice is a fast-growing and dynamic business, currently with 21 partners and approximately 200 professional staff in the UK.

We work as a national practice providing advice and support in all aspects of Indirect Tax (VAT, Customs Duty, Green taxes) to a broad range of business sectors including large multi-nationals, household name retailers and public sector organisations.

The role in question is with the Trade & Customs team.

Trade & Customs

KPMG has a large team of Trade & Customs specialists located across the UK, working to support our national portfolio of clients with a variety of Trade & Customs issues. Within the team we have specialists in areas such as valuation, classification, origin and customs special procedures.  We work closely with our colleagues both in Indirect Tax, other areas of Tax such as Transfer Pricing, and the wider Advisory business in order to deliver value to KPMG’s clients.  We offer a wide range of services including customs advisory, compliance reviews, training support and preparation of duty reclaims.

Roles and Responsibilities

As a key member of our team you will be:

  • providing high quality customs and international trade advice for clients in line with UK legislation, HMRC guidance, and other local tax jurisdiction rules (where appropriate with support from KPMG member firms);
  • taking a lead to develop and maintain strong client relationships for those clients you are responsible for;
  • developing innovative solutions for our clients including identifying Customs Duty risks and opportunities;
  • managing the finances, including developing and managing project budgets and billing to ensure profitable delivery of client engagements;
  • Managing some of the team's business development and marketing initiatives;
  • coaching and developing junior team members of the team from both a technical and commercial perspective;
  • Working closely with directors and partners who will provide you with the support and opportunities to assist you in realising your full potential;
  • linking closely with specialist colleagues in International Tax, Transfer pricing and Indirect Tax (VAT) where necessary.

Experience and Skills

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who would like to be part of a successful and growing team. You should be someone who:

  • takes personal responsibility and accountability for their work;
  • has very strong people skills for engaging with our clients and team members;
  • has significant relevant Trade and Customs experience from a compliance or advisory role and/or relevant chartered tax and/or equivalent legal/international qualification;
  • communicates with impact, in a way that is open, honest, consistent and clear;
  • identifies and pursues business opportunities and demonstrates sound judgement, including the ability to identify and evaluate risk issues and know when to involve others;
  • has strong analytical skills and a commercial approach to resolving issues and providing advice;
  • has a high level of drive and enthusiasm with a positive attitude and willingness to keep up to date technically;
  • has an appreciation of and/or understanding of ethical/risk issues within a client service environment;
  • is willing to coach less experienced staff.  Gives clear direction and can provide positive, constructive feedback;
  • Works in a cooperative, respectful manner with colleagues and clients;
  • Monitors and upholds high quality of service to clients.
