The successful applicant will benefit from plenty of autonomy and the opportunity to shape and develop the role. The role anticipates a hybrid working arrangement and will be based in our London office.

Specification

Key areas of responsibility:

  • Contract Negotiation: drafting and negotiating contractual data protection and Freedom of Information provisions and providing guidance to KPMG’s commercial lawyers;
  • Supporting the Data Protection Office: advising on complex DPIAs and data incidents and working to streamline processes in this space;
  • Advising on Products, Services and Transformations: advising on the privacy compliance of new products and services to be sold and procured by KPMG, particularly technology solutions and the incorporation of artificial intelligence, as well as anticipating and advising on privacy concerns arising from internal transformation projects;
  • Regulatory Liaison: liaising with and as the first point of contact for, the Information Commissioner’s Office and advocating for KPMG in responding to relevant consultations;
  • Freedom of Information (“FoI”): advising on FoI issues in contracts, deliverables and requests from clients and audited entities which are subject to the FoI Act;
  • Guidance and Training: drafting and presenting guidance and training on privacy and emerging privacy issues; and
  • Horizon scanning: staying abreast of privacy law and emerging legal trends in privacy and AI, principally in the UK, but with consideration of other relevant jurisdictions, such as the EU and US.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills

  • UK qualified, experienced privacy lawyer;
  • deep understanding of the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018;
  • capable and pragmatic contract negotiator, with demonstrable experience of drafting and negotiating data protection clauses;
  • good understanding of (and interest in) emerging technologies and technology regulation, particularly with regards to AI;
  • ability to work under pressure, apply legal principles to varied scenarios and devise pragmatic solutions to complex legal problems;
  • aptitude for explaining complex legal and technological issues to a wide range of stakeholders of varied backgrounds;
  • ability manage own workload with competing deadlines and stakeholders; and
  • collaborative team player, with strong communication skills.
  • Prior experience of advising on FoI and AI is desirable, but not essential.
