Job description

Strategy & Commercial Assistant Manager - Strategic Advisory Services

Base Location: London, Manchester and Birmingham. Plus network of 20 offices nationally: www.kpmg88careers.co.uk/experienced-professional/#LeBlender.OfficeLocations

KPMG's Infrastructure and Government Strategic Advisory Services (SAS) team needs an experienced Commercial Assistant Manager, with experience of working with PCR 2015 (and awareness of the upcoming Procurement Act), who wants to make the next step into a more strategic and advisory role, working with a range of clients.

The team works with central government (Departments and ALBs) on some of the biggest, most complex and pressing strategic commercial challenges.  Work typically involves identifying, creating, and delivering innovative commercial solutions, including designing new models for supply chains and competitions, to support complex programme and policy implementation.

The team supports clients across the whole of the programme and contracting lifecycles, with a focus on creating collaborative delivery supply-chains which redefine the interface between public and private sectors.  This can be across infrastructure, services, and mixed supply contracts, but not usually in construction, utilities, or defence.

Why join KPMG - Infrastructure Advisory Group?

KPMG’s Infrastructure Advisory Group (IAG) is widely recognised as one of the world’s leading independent strategic advisors in the infrastructure sector. We provide in-depth advice on the strategic, economic, financial, and commercial issues driving infrastructure projects spanning the transport, power and utilities, social infrastructure and central government departments and private sector bodies sectors in the UK and internationally. There is no one-size fits all in IAG; we’re as diverse as the world around us and our people are our most important asset.

Why Join KPMG as an Assistant Manager in Infrastructure and Government Strategic Advisory Services?

It is an exciting time to join our rapidly growing team as we work on some of the most high-profile public sector delivery challenges in the UK.

You will have the opportunity to advise on commercial strategies, strategic and lotting options, competition design, commercial business cases and contract management approaches.

What will you be doing?

Assistant Managers contribute to client delivery by shaping and delivering workstreams, supporting business and proposition development and helping our team to grow and develop. Key areas where Assistant Managers contribute to the team include:

  • Using practical experience and insight to assess client-developed commercial solutions
  • Supporting the development of procurement & commercial models, building an informed understanding of strengths and weaknesses for options
  • Taking ownership of small workstreams within engagements and contributing to larger workstreams, working closely with workstream leads
  • Planning and conducting analysis of data and evidence
  • Contributing to the development of solutions to complex problems and challenging the thinking of more senior colleagues and clients
  • Working with workstream leads and other colleagues to shape and produce client ready deliverables (slides, Word documents or Excel)
  • Building an internal and external network
  • Providing timely feedback and coaching to other team members and contributing to personal development of the team
  • Participating in team activities

What will you need to do it?

We are looking for applicants with an interest in procurement and commercial strategy who display many of the following attributes:

  • Procurement experience of working with PCR 2015, that may include shaping and executing competitions carried out under PCR 2015 (or similar regulations), not necessarily in central government
  • The ability to identify and articulate insights from their procurement experience, and draw compelling parallels for clients
  • A broad interest in the government procurement space, in particular emerging contracting and supply chain models, and the Transforming Public Procurement Programme
  • An emerging understanding of the sector-wide issues facing the government and infrastructure sectors and/or large-scale procurements
  • Familiarity with the principles within the government’s Sourcing Playbook and how they apply across the procurement lifecycle
  • Being comfortable handling ambiguity and changing client demands
  • Ability to review and assess technical data and distil the key strategic insights
  • Excellent English written and oral communication skills
  • Professional qualification (or working towards one) or relevant postgraduate degrees welcome

Skills we’d love to see/Amazing Extras:

  • A passion for learning and maintaining knowledge of trends in the latest thinking related to client operational and/or supplier delivery models
  • Structured thinking skills combined with creativity
  • High levels of drive, ambition, and the ability to work at pace
