Job description

Who are we

KPMG is one of the world's largest and most respected audit and consulting firms. We've supported the UK through times of war and peace, prosperity and recession, political and regulatory upheaval. We've proudly stood beside the institutions and businesses which make the UK what it is.

Major Projects Advisory (MPA) is a multi-disciplinary team within Customer, Operations, and Infrastructure (CO&I): one of seven super service lines across KPMG’s Advisory business.  Operating from all over the UK we do work those matters, serving the country with diligence and expertise. We are a multi-disciplinary team of cross-sector experts in complex project and programme delivery. We transform our clients’ delivery capability and partner with them to deliver faster, cheaper, greener, and better. As a recognised market leader, we are proud to partner with an impressive client base across both private and public sectors, delivering lasting results in several market sectors, namely:

  • Government

  • Healthcare

  • Defence

  • Water

  • Construction and materials

  • Energy

  • Transport

  • Financial Services

  • Retail

Why join KPMG as a Technology, Sustainability and Innovation Manager?

“TSI” (Technology, Sustainability and Innovation) is part of KPMG’s Major Projects Advisory team that was established on the back of sustained market growth, so you’ll be joining one of the firms fastest growing areas at a time of real significance. The TSI team supports clients utilising data, construction, and sustainability expertise to transform infrastructure and project delivery.

Our blend of areas works in unison, with data and technology increasingly seen as enablers to improve efficiency and productivity, while informing sustainability considerations, and innovation helping change infrastructure delivery. We help organisations deliver long-term resilience against ongoing risks such as climate change impacts, as well as short-term challenges such as cost pressures through innovative construction techniques.

You will work on some of the UK’s and Europe’s largest and most complex construction & infrastructure programmes, and business challenges – helping clients reduce their carbon intensity, improve capital delivery efficiency, and navigate new market entry across supply chains.

Within TSI, you will enjoy a high degree of autonomy over your day. We generally have a flexible approach to office or client site visits, averaging 2-3 times a week as work needs dictate.

What you will be doing

In this role, we are looking for someone with a good understanding of the sustainability landscape. Our clients face a range of sustainability challenges facing infrastructure and the built environment, such as decarbonisation, climate resilience, social value, nature, sustainability linked finance, nature and biodiversity, and circularity.  We will require a skilled individual that is adaptable and has experience in collaborating with a multi-disciplinary technical team. You will also need to have an understanding or willingness to learn about project management, construction, and organisational transformation, and experience in translating highly technical information to a broad audience in non-technical terms.

Managers in our team are right at the forefront of delivery, and this role requires a breadth of delivery experience - ideally gained from infrastructure-related projects and programmes. As one of the senior consultants on the ground, you’ll be applying your experience every day, bringing to life tailored solutions for our clients whilst managing important relationships.

As a team, we take on a wide range of assignments, where we foster and encourage an entrepreneurial spirit and intellectual curiosity to best support our clients most challenging situations. This will include:

  • Acting as day-to-day manager for delivery of senior client-facing work within specialist areas, embedding a strong human / end user focus – which includes producing high-quality outputs with excellent attention to detail

  • Translating complex themes into simple to understand presentations

  • Thinking through solutions and challenging the team (including the extended client team), to develop new approaches

  • Keeping up to date with developments affecting your work, identifying opportunities for thought leadership and assisting with the development of KPMG’s opinion on infrastructure sustainability

  • Looking after financial aspects of an engagement - ensuring we keep clients informed of costs and time incurred, in addition to raising invoices and recovering fees.

  • Creating high-level and detailed integrated plans across multi-discipline workstreams

  • Creating high impact presentational material that help to describe complex problems to non-technical audiences.

  • Managing the delivery of client-facing work relating to sustainability, ensuring new processes and tools are designed with a strong human /end user focus – this includes producing high-quality outputs with serious attention to detail

  • Business development - identifying potential opportunities for new assignments and assisting with bids

  • Coaching and mentoring your colleagues – both up and down

  • Being a role model and living our values

What you will need to do it

For this opportunity, we’re looking for candidates with an established career primarily built around the delivery of sustainability initiatives in an infrastructure context.

Your track record should evidence:

  • Experience of working on infrastructure sustainability in an advisory or delivery capacity for another consultancy, client-side role in industry or policy/regulatory environment

  • Broad knowledge of, and ability to apply the range of sustainability standards, frameworks and legislation that applies to infrastructure client challenges – such as TCFD, CSRD, ISSB, TNFD, GRI, UK climate adaptation reporting, UK SDR and sector-specific regulations and policy

We are a highly innovative team that constantly look to develop both ourselves and our clients by fostering a culture of continuous improvement – no matter their position within the team structure. The ideal candidate would be driven to help drive this culture and take ownership for team strategy activities and initiatives.

The role will require a skilled individual that is adaptable and has experience in collaborating with a multi-disciplinary technical team. This will include an understanding or willingness to learn about project management, construction, and organisational transformation. Experience in translating technical information to a broad audience in non-technical terms will be highly valued.

Skills we’d love to see / amazing extras:

  • Delivery of climate and sustainability risk assessments, decarbonisation strategies and adaptation plans

  • Delivery of geospatial analysis using platforms such as ArcGIS

  • Experience of working in a big 4 or similar consultancy environment

  • Experience of applying project, programme and/or portfolio management

  • Analytical and problem-solving skills – including working with numerical data

  • An ability to build and maintain great relationships

  • Confident communication and presentation skills

  • A good spread of experience using different software/applications such as Teams, PowerPoint, Word, Excel

  • Relevant professional certification – e.g., APM PMQ/PPQ/ChPP; MoP; MSP; PRINCE2

  • Membership of a relevant professional body, such as IEMA or equivalent

Our TSI Team Pledge

Specifically within TSI, we have a high degree of autonomy and flexibility to accommodate personal circumstances, including how your work day is structured. While we’d expect you to come into the office for specific in-person events such as internal meetings, networking events or client meetings, we generally have a flexible approach to hybrid working, blending in-person interaction (typically 2-3 days a week in the office or as work needs dictate) with home working. This will vary from project to project.

We understand that other commitments may occasionally restrict your work day such as school runs, caring responsibilities or medical appointments, and we are able to work around these events as needs arise. Workload and hours can also vary between projects. However, we are an open team and encourage all colleagues to speak up if they ever feel overloaded, either from personal or professional circumstances.

As a team, we are highly diverse, be it age, position, educational background or expertise. Some of our colleagues are from financial, engineering or even humanities backgrounds. We welcome applications from all educational backgrounds or those who may have experience in lieu of formal qualifications, and encourage those to apply even if they feel only partially suitable to the requirements. Our priority is to ensure we are hiring the right person for the role, as opposed to applicants adhering to a strict set of criteria.
