KPMG Career Stories: Andrew Burrows, Senior Manager in Banking Regulatory Assurance team
In my role I’m responsible for the provision of assurance and advisory support to clients and also for provision of technical support to our audit teams. Outside of client delivery my role also includes development and delivery of training, developing and managing others, as well as providing the opportunity to be integrally involved in a range of business development and thought leadership initiatives.
Why did you chose a career in Audit at KPMG?
I joined KPMG as an experienced hire in an internal facing finance role in 2008, supporting the Audit function while studying for my ACCA qualification. Having joined from an industry competitor, my key driver for joining KPMG was due to the firm’s reputation for developing and supporting team members to realise their potential while continually delivering quality to clients. The decision to join KPMG was one of the best I’ve made in my career as the leadership team within Banking Audit and the wider firm quickly recognised my potential and have consistently supported me in my continued development and career progression with the firm.
Describe the training you’ve received, both at induction and throughout your time at KPMG.
On joining KPMG as an external hire I had not previously had experience in a financial services or consultancy environment. From day one I have been provided with the training and support I needed, whether it be through formal classroom based training, on the job coaching, or via informal support from my peers and seniors. The training I have received started at the national induction where I was introduced to the values and culture of KPMG and has continued through regular technical and soft skills training that has enabled me to not only deliver in my role but also to develop to reach my potential with KPMG
Describe how the reality of KPMG lived up to or exceeded your expectations.
My time with KPMG has consistently exceeded my expectations, and the Firm has always supported my career development and has provided me with a wide range of opportunities and experiences to keep me motivated and help me develop a rounded range of personal and business skills. The opportunity to work with a multitude of people from across the business has been great and the breadth of opportunities really has meant that no two days are the same. In addition, I’m passionate about helping clients succeed while also supporting others to reach their potential, something that my role at KPMG enables me to do every day.
Describe your best KPMG experience so far
I’ve had a lot of great experiences at KPMG, however one that really stands out was helping a client in implementing a reporting framework to comply with new regulatory reporting requirements. In order to successfully support the client we had to pull together a multi-disciplinary team from across the firm to leverage the wide range of skills within KPMG to deliver on all aspects of the project. By taking a one firm approach we were able to provide a quality output that exceeded the client’s expectations and made me proud to work for KPMG.
To what extent do you work with colleagues from other parts of KPMG? How are client service teams structured?
In my role I regularly work with team members from across the Firm on client and internal deliverables. Financial services assurance engagements require a range of skill sets including deep technical knowledge, project management and assurance delivery expertise and projects regularly involve colleagues from across KPMG’s audit and advisory functions to successfully deliver for our clients. As well as experience in working with cross functional teams my role has provided me with significant exposure to senior colleagues and Partners from across KPMG and also in the market enabling me to leverage from their skills and experience to continuously develop.
KPMG also actively supports work life balance, something that has been key for me as a father of two young girls
What do you think KPMG Audit does particularly well and therefore differentiates itself in the market?
KPMG has a reputation for quality within the market, both in terms of the quality of work performed and the quality of our audit colleagues. We also excel in really understanding and getting to bottom of the key issues facing our clients, actively collaborating with them to achieve their strategic goals by providing pragmatic, targeted and proportionate support and advice.
What’s the culture like at KPMG?
The firm recognises the need to support and give back to individuals within the team and have introduced a number of initiatives to support employees to be their best and to reward high performance such as giving everyone their birthday off and providing secondment / learning opportunities to continually develop. KPMG also actively supports work life balance, something that has been key for me as a father of two young girls. By providing the flexibility for me to perform my work deliverables around family commitments I am able to perform successfully within my role while also being there for important family events to support my daughters in their own development.
What are your career ambitions and how will KPMG help you realise them?
My ultimate career ambition is to continue my progression and become a partner / director with KPMG. The experiences I’ve had with the firm to date have enabled me to develop a well-rounded range of skills across client delivery, people leadership and in finance and risk management and by continuing to take advantage of the range of opportunities available within the firm, I will be best placed to continue my progression towards my career goal.
What have you done or are planning to do with your six days of volunteering?
KPMG supports all colleagues to volunteer and over the past few years I have been fortunate to be involved in a wide range of initiatives to give back to the community. These have included spending time in a care home helping to look after people with Alzheimer’s to spending time cleaning and developing parks within the local community.
